Two easy ways to obtain a domain name

June 30, 2021

There are two main ways for sellers to obtain a domain name.

One, buying a domain name from Shopify, which will automatically add the domain name once purchased, saving the seller some time and is suitable for novice programming sellers. These domains cost between $9-14 per year.

Second, buy a domain name from a third party such as GoDaddy, which starts at $10/year. The downside is that sellers need to redirect their DNS records.

Here are the steps to link a new Shopify shop to a third-party domain

1. Add a new domain name in Shopify

In the Shopify administration page, from the left navigation into the Shopify shop, click on the domain name, use the "Connect existing domain" button to add a domain name.

2. Update DNS records

Log in to the relevant account with the third-party domain name provider. Locate the DNS settings and follow these steps.

-Replace the @ or primary A record with the following IP address: 23.227.38.65 (i.e. Shopify's IP address).

-Add or replace www CNAME with storename.myshopify.com (i.e. the shop is linked in Shopify without HTTP, which can be found on the domain settings page).

3. Remove the store encryption password

Otherwise, even if the site is online, no one will be able to access the site.

4. If necessary, set it to the main domain name

In the Shopify Official Store (Online Store) > Domains (Domains), you can click on the "Change primary domain" (Change primary domain) to choose the primary domain name.

5. Add other domain names

Repeat steps 1 and 2 to add additional domains, if available. All domains will be redirected to the primary domain and the settings can be changed at any time.

*Number of domains has no impact on SEO.
