Shopify x Alipay cooperation

July 6, 2021

Shopify has partnered with Alipay, Asia's leading digital payment platform, to unlock even more potential for Shopify merchants in cross-border e-commerce.

Using Alipay, Shopify merchants will be able to accept payments from billion annual active users in China, but also hundreds of millions of consumers in other Asian regions.

In China, the Double Eleven shopping season is known to attract hundreds of millions of consumers every year. According to Alibaba, this year's Double 11  event generated US$74 billion in merchandise sales (GMV). Companies in the US generated more than US$5.4 billion in sales from the Chinese market, making it the largest international market to generate sales during the event.

"At Shopify, we promote borderless e-commerce and are committed to helping merchants build successful brands - not just in their home market, but globally." Engaging consumers across Asia is certainly a huge growth opportunity for our merchants, and Alipay already provides inclusive financial services to over one billion people in China," said Kaz Najatian, vice president of product and merchant services at Shopify. "Through this partnership, we will assist merchants in providing the best shopping experience for these potential cross-border consumers".

Currently, the Alipay payment channel is available to all Shopify merchants in the US, but more markets will be added to the service in the future, including Hong Kong, India, Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines, Malaysia, Thailand, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
