How to improve your shop's navigation in Shopify?

June 25, 2021

The main task of good website navigation and navigation in an e-commerce shop is to get people to what they want as quickly as possible. In other words, you want to make it easier for people to use your products and also be able to access all the other purchase-related information that they might be interested in along the way. To achieve this, we will use two menus.

The main header menu

The main header menu is where the most important pages of the shop are located. In most cases, these pages are your home page, the shop catalog, the search function, the shopping cart, and, optionally, some of the best product ranges.

Please note that the top menu is not the best place for an about page, contact page, etc. We don't want people to be distracted from their main task - buying!

The footer menu is exactly where we want to place all the other pages.

By default, Shopify already provides you with two pre-made menus - one in the header and one in the footer. All you have to do is adjust the content in them.

Go to the Shopify dashboard and then go to Online Store → Navigation.

From there, select the main menu to start making edits to it. Currently, the menu only contains links to your home page and product catalog. This setting is good enough for many shops, but if you want to expand the menu, you can add product categories or certain product collections here.

Click on Add menu item. Click on the "Links" field and then select the page you want to link to from the drop-down list. For example, first, click on "Collections" and then select the collection you want to add.

When you have finished, click on  "Save menu". You will now see the effect of these changes when you refresh the home page.

As you can see, the links to the shopping cart and search function are already there, so there is no need to add them manually. Next, the footer menu. Go back to Online Shop → Navigation and this time, click on the footer menu link. By default, the only link in the menu is to the shop's search page. Let's add more! Specifically, let's add all the other pages in the shop. Again, to get started, click on the "Add" menu item.

From the drop-down list, click on Pages and then select the page you want to add. Repeat until all pages have been added.

The last page to be added is your shop policy page. These work slightly differently. Click the Add menu item again, then select Policies from the drop-down list. Then, browse through your policy pages (terms, refunds, privacy, etc.) and add them to the menu individually.

When you have finished, click the "Save" menu button at the bottom. Return to the home page and refresh the page. You should see the updated footer menu there.
