How does Shopify open to new markets?

June 26, 2021

In the beginning, Shopify's management and retail operating system were only available in English, but now new language capabilities have been added to the platform, including Hindi, Korean, Malay, Thai, Traditional Chinese, and many other languages.

When Shopify launched five years ago, we already had over 1.35 million business users in 175 countries, but the only downside was that we didn't localize. So in June 2020, we partnered with Walmart with the aim of better serving US SMBs and expanding the e-commerce market to some extent.

They have made great progress in Asia, Western Europe, and South America, and in the process, realizing that if you want to do well, for example in India, you have to be able to do cash on delivery; if you want to serve Chinese merchants, you need to have a connection to the Chinese market.

So the local language, the payment methods, the partners, are key factors in determining whether they are a good fit for the local market. "In terms of international growth, we have a lot of things to do now and we can't rush it; it's a long-term strategy", stated the President of Shopify.
