The average shopping cart abandonment rate in 2021

June 30, 2021

According to the Baymar Research Institute, the average abandonment rate of shopping carts varies among different devices, being mobile and tablet the highest percentages of abandonment.

Desktop. 69.75%

Mobile: 85.65%

tablet PC. 80.74%

The location of your customers also plays a role in the possibility of them giving up their online shopping basket. About 86.15% of the Spanish shopping baskets were abandoned halfway. On the other side of the scale, the abandonment rate of Dutch shoppers was the lowest, 65.49%.

Some commodities also have a large abandonment rate. Women's knitwear, leather goods, and underwear categories are most likely to appear as "website window shoppers".

As expected, December is the month with the highest abandonment rate of shopping carts. Black Friday and holiday sales mean more people are shopping (and therefore more giving up shopping carts).

Many factors play a role in shopping cart abandonment, so it can be said that the vast majority of people who add items to their online shopping cart do not complete the purchase for some reason. But that doesn't mean there's nothing you can do about it.
